The official name is Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, or PED. In laymans terms, there are a whole bunch of pigs in China and Europe who just can't stop sh----ng. The problem for us is that according to the US Department of Agriculture, the virus has spread to the U.S. And apparently,. PED is so severe that is can kill 80 to 100% of infected piglets. Symptoms include of course, diarrhea and also fever, vomiting and even death.
The USDA says PED has been reported in 15 states in the U.S and for the farmer affected, the results have been devastating. If the problem becomes worse, pork inventories could drop sharply and you know what that means. Higher prices at the grocery for all the foods we like, like bacon, ham, baby back ribs, pork chops and of course, everyone's favorite, pickled pigs feet.
Not that we all would suffer eating a little less animal flesh loaded with fats and nitrates, but for the farmers, PED is hitting them where it hurts most, in the pocketbook. So hopefully they can nip this problem in bud for everyone's sake.
