One of the casualties of the government shutdown has been the education department's "head start" program which provides the poorest children in America age 1 - 5 early learning opportunities to get them ready for kindergarten.
But thanks to the philanthropic efforts of John and Laura Arnold, the program may not be dead afterall. The couple has pledges $10 million to fun headstart for the next month. Yep, 10 mil is only enough to fund the 7 programs cancelled through the shutdown til the end of October. Hopefully, congress can fix the mess by then, or Head Start will be cancelled again.
John Arnold gained his wealth as a hedge fun manager and reportedly worth 2.8 billion. He and his wife Laura have 3 children of their own. The $10 million is a personal donation and does not come from the charitible foundaton they started in 2008 bearing their name.
The cancellation of Head Start has affected over 7,000 children nationwide.
